Disciple (2019)

for mezzo and piano

My sister Isabel wrote “Disciple” while visiting the ruins of Whitby Abbey on the coast of England. The abbey rests on a grassy cliff, exposed to the elements: sun, wind, rain, and the incessant pounding of the waves below. The poem and its musical setting capture the spirituality inherent in nature, from the gentlest whispers to the most powerful, earth-shaking shouts.
